What state regions do you recognize?

While I was speaking with one of my fellow interns we got into a small debate. What states are included in which regions of the U.S.? Many of us will agree to states that are in the middle of particular regions, where do the boundaries lie? This was especially problematic when I started writing a survey asking people where they wanted to meet for a workshop. Which states constitute which regions? Can I say mid-Atlantic and have that mean the same thing to everyone? Which regions are California and Texas in? Finally I decided to break down choices into a map that I colored and numbered. Not that this map represents exact regions in my mind. . .

  1. good to see you! I'm puzzled that the 2 Carolinas aren't in same region, but whatever...otherwise, I would agree...

Will we be getting pix from region 5?

  2. Generally I would group California with Washington and Oregon and put the others from those two groups in with Colorado. Louisiana goes with the southern states. Texas goes with the southwest. Arkansas with Missouri or the south, Oklahoma with the midwest. I would also split region 8 with 9 and 7. And I'm tempted to put WI and IL in the midwest and TN in region 6. But that's just me. I think you're right, though; it gets fuzzy around the edges. And I think texans in general like to think that they're their own region. ;-)
